Did you know?
The Košice Region is one of the eight Slovak administrative regions. The region was first established in 1923 and its present borders were established in 1996. It consists of 11 districts and 440 municipalities, 17 of which have a town status. About one third of the region’s population lives in the agglomeration of Košice, which is its main economic and cultural centre.

It is located in the southern part of eastern Slovakia and covers an area of 6,752 km2
Demographics
The average population density in the region is 117.9 inhabitants per km2, which is very similar to the country’s average (110 per km2)

AC Power/Voltage
Electricity supply is 220 volts at 50 cycles. Plug points (type E) are the same as in France, Belgium, Poland and the Czech Republic. Socket compatible with plug types C, E & F.
To operate U.S.-made appliances and equipment, you’ll need a transformer to convert the 220V to 110V and an adaptor for the plugs.
Money
The local currency is the Euro (EUR) which is divided into 100 cents.
Notes are €5, €10, €20, €50, €100, €200 and €500.
Coins are 1¢, 2¢, 5¢, 10¢, 20¢, 50¢, €1 and €2.
Credit cards
Visa and Mastercard are widely used, while American Express and Diners cards may not always be accepted. Credit cards can be used for purchases and also to access money from ATMs. The individual ATM will have a list of card symbols that can be used there (bank charges may apply).
Banking services
Banks in Slovakia generally open around 9.00am and close about 5pm Monday through Friday. Selected banks may open on Saturday mornings.
ATMs
Most banks operate ATMs, which accept a range of cards. Most ATMs, although linked to a specific bank, are part of a central network so you can transact with a bank card for a nominal charge. ATMs can be found in all shopping malls, major supermarkets, airport, ….

Destinations
An attractive tourist destination which can be proud of several historical monuments recorded in the UNESCO world heritage list and at the same time offers unrepeatable and unique natural scenery. For each admirer of monuments and history there is Spiš destination, which is not to be missed. SPIŠSKÁ NOVÁ VES, the town is characterized by the longest lenticular-shaped square in Slovakia. At the same time it is the designated entry gate to the Slovak Paradise National Park. Spiš markets, tours of the square with its cultural-historical jewels, climbs to the highest church tower in Slovakia, visits to the ZOO, the organising of many cultural events are all attractions and at the same time invitations to this town. And the surroundings of Spišská Nová Ves offer many cultural and natural monuments. Markušovce with its Renaissance manor house and rococo pavilion of the Dardanelles, Žehra with the early-Gothic church, and the largest castle complex in Central Europe – the Spiš Castle is among the real historical jewels of this region. Hunger and thirst in this area is also not possible. Who could ever resist such culinary speciality as Spišské pirohy and Buchwald beer.

A varied mosaic of natural and recreational attractions which have something to offer in summer as well as in winter. The uniqueness of the Slovak Karst, with its beautiful rocky formations, led to the building of several hiking and instructional trails and cycling paths. ROŽŇAVA, a town of famous mining traditions, education and crafts, the administrative and cultural centre of the upper Gemer. It lies in the valley of the Slaná River. A rare historical nucleus with a square-shaped main square of medieval origin – the largest of its type in Slovakia. Visitors can admire the town and its surroundings from the viewing guard tower which is a symbol of the town. Visitors can become familiar with the rich history of mining and metallurgy of Rožňava and the upper Gemer at the Mining Museum, which also offers an exposition on the nature of the Slovak Karst region as well as an historical exposition focused on a presentation of the most beautiful museum collection of the town and its surroundings.

KOŠICE, the metropolis of the east is the second largest city in Slovakia. The city is situated in the foothills of the Slovak Ore Mountains in the broader valley of the River Hornád, not far from the border with Hungary. A unique Central European metropolis, a European Capital of Culture 2013! The unique atmosphere of the city is a mix of culture, lifestyle, history and industry. Košice is home to the oldest marathon in Europe, the place with the largest monument reservation in Slovakia, with the largest and most significant golden treasure in Europe, but primarily a place where life can be experienced and enjoyed. THE EASTERNMOST GOTHIC CATHEDRAL IN EUROPE The model for the cathedral was the St. Victor Cathedral in Xanten, a town on the Rhine River in Germany. In the course of centuries a number of legends have arisen around the St. Elisabeth Cathedral in Košice. Legend has it that the builders placed a hollow stone in an unknown location during construction. If this stone were to be removed, it would cause the entire church to collapse. KOŠICE GOLDEN TREASURE It is made up of 2920 golden coins, ducats and double-ducats, three golden medals and a Renaissance golden chain. It was stored in a box made of embossed copper sheet metal engraved with images of animals. The treasure was probably hidden from Imrich Thököly, who during the anti-Habsburg rebellions occupied Košice. A KEEN VISITOR OF COFFEEHOUSES Sándor Márai was the most important representative of the city’s literature and culture of the 20th century. He loved Košice and its residents. There he drew inspiration for his greatest works.

The region with the tastiest wine in the world, which is formed by picturesque vineyards. The Lower Zemplín is a region of wide fertile fields, vineyards, forest meadows, shaded mountains, Karička and Pozdišovce ceramics. For the perceptive tourist the nature of the Zemplín region hides a great many beautiful nooks and crannies and places untouched by man. MICHALOVCE, is the main centre lying in the heart of the Zemplín. It is the entry gate to the recreational area Zemplínska šírava. The regularly held cultural-social attractions in the town of Michalovce provide agreeable moments for its visitors and residents alike are. The new, reconstructed central pedestrian zone with its attractive main feature – a singing fountain – is the natural centre of this modern heart of the Zemplín.To taste holúbky (gastro speciality of the area) and drink unique Tokaj wine are few of the many unforgettable activities that you can do in Lower Zemplín.

This unique place in Slovakia complement the picturesque villages, old wine cellars, wine shops but also the hard and conscientious work of growers, wine producers and local residents make it unique.
